My Life in the UK and Retro Style

Ok, I know I've been gone for a long, long, long time...but that's life right? We move on, we grow, we change, we learn, and I dedicated my time to other things in order to develop myself. Life has been beautiful and so wondrous for me. Just an update, I've moved to England and will be here for a few months. Albeit, I was pretty homesick initially, but I now am enjoying every moment here. I'm such an analytical person by nature and being here has tripled that aspect in me. I could only wonder what my next steps are and what life will be like but I do know I've grown tremendously over the past few months.

Living away from what I know has been an experience I'll never forget. I use to think our cultures were so similar, Canada and England, but in reality we differ on so many aspects. It's given me a greater love for Toronto but an even bigger thirst to travel.

On a fashion tip, the UK definitely offers a plethora of options and people are much more stylish here than back home, at least in my opinion. Of course, it's not to say everyone cares to dress well (that's far from the truth) but there are many more people who have a sense of style and men certainly do take care of themselves in a way North Americans don't.

Anyway, in regards to today's post, I decided to do something more retro. I was searching 70s fashion and came upon some photos I loved (some of which are photos of fashion today that was inspired by the 70s). The women look so sweet and well put together, it reminds me so much of my mother in photos I saw of her when she was my age. The last photo is from the early 80s, and yes, that is Jodie Foster. Regardless, funky house, and many other genres barely make an impact on this side of the world. I first heard this song almost a year ago, and it took a while for it to grow on me but I've learned to appreciate even more genres of music than I listened to before. Even though we live in such globalized culture, simple things like musical tastes, can differ from place to place.

WOW! Adele, never ceases to amaze me with her work. Ever since I heard Chasing Pavements years ago, I fell head over heels in love with her music. The song below is just another example of how beautiful her music is. Although the song doesn't resonate with me (in terms of the lyrics), I can still feel every word of hers and because of the journey I've traveled, I do feel I understand this song as well.

Kavinsky - Nightcall

Take a listen to the video I've posted, it's called Nightcall and its produced by French electro house artist, Kavinsky. This song is sick! Seriously, I first heard it a little while back and I liked how reminiscent the song was of the 80's but it didn't fully appeal to me then. After hearing it again in the Drive soundtrack, it made me fall in obsessively in love with the song. Perhaps the feel of the movie really lent to visualizing the song itself (admittedly I'm also head over heels in lust with Ryan Gosling...yes, I thought he was a cutie since Breaker High days annnnd he's Canadian, BONUS!). I swear I wanted to just hear it playing through the whole movie instead of hearing people talk. Someone told me I'd love the soundtrack of Drive, obviously they were right and they know me well enough to my musical taste...even though its all across the board.

Givenchy Haute Couture - Fall 2011

Givenchy Haute Couture Fall 2011 is breath taking. I am so enamoured with these pieces, if only I had the thousands of dollars needed to purchase them! These days, couture is looked at as something that is a dying breed in fashion, and it generally doesn't make much money for the designers and fashion houses themselves. Regardless, when you realize the work and effort put into the creation of these clothes, you can only gasp when you see something as beautiful as Givenchy's line. The detailing and the intricacies of each stitch and design, is just amazing to look at. I know this came out in July but I feel like I'm in awe every time I see these gowns. It's beautiful, refreshing, sophisticated, angelic, and slightly mermaid-like. Yes, boys and girls, this is my billionth post of Nickelson Wooster. I remember over a year ago, people (outside of the fashion industry) were totally clueless as to who he was. I remember seeing a photo of him and as strange as I thought he was, I was still drawn to him and made a blog post based on that one photo. I had no clue who he was but I knew there was something interesting about him.

Now Mr. Wooster has gained some fame in the fashion blogging realm and has definitely won my heart. I'm not going to elaborate on him or discuss how amazing I think his style is, since I continually say that on any post with photos of him. Just enjoy it!

Women: Fall or Summer Fashion?

Right now Canadian weather is all over the place, one day its cold and the next day its hot. Fall is soon approaching and the temperatures will begin to settle and become colder and colder. Of course, as a friend pointed out, you walk on the streets and see people in shorts and then you look beside them and see someone in a jacket with boots on. Clearly people are still trying to figure out what clothes are the most appropriate and are in between both their summer and fall wardrobes.

Anyway, the photos I chose below sort of remind of the scene I see when I go out these days. The best tip I can give to people is to layer. I layer like crazy, especially if I leave early in the morning (when its cold) or I know I'm going to return at night (also when its cold). I go from running around in a tuque and leather jacket to a t-shirt. Layering is the only way to deal with the sort of temperature changes we deal with around this time.

Look at this gem that I've found. Lauryn Hill performing at age 13 at The Apollo for Amateur Night. I wonder how the people who were booing felt once this woman became one of the most memorable females in Hip-Hop and R&B. You can even hear a guy yelling at her to "get off the mic"! I've got to say, for a 13 year old, she held some serious composure while that heckling and booing was going on. Many singers might have been completely discouraged after that experience and perhaps given up their dreams. If it wasn't for tenacity, passion, and drive, we would have never been able to experience the beautiful, soulful, and powerful music of Lauryn Hill.

I wish this woman had released more music. I remember I bought tickets to her concert in Toronto early this year and I sold it the day of the event because I had so much work I needed to do. Yes, that's the power of prioritizing. I gave up something I had waited so long for, not knowing when and if I'd ever see her perform again.

Anyway, I decided to post this today because I heard this song yesterday after walking out of a pub and I realized how powerful it is. There are so many songs of Lauryn Hill's that speaks to me but I remember first hearing this song years ago and not really understanding her words. Now after growing a bit and understanding the struggles of relationships, I can definitely feel her words to my core.

I posted this photo as a reminder to myself of the feelings and emotions I went through the day it was taken. Although it was minute in comparison to things I have felt before, it was the beginning of a time where I recommitted to developing myself and enjoying every little thing life provides. It was also the beginning of a time where I reminded myself of the power of using my experiences to give me the strength to overcome obstacles and learn from my past. I've never felt as strong as I do now. Regardless of how difficult situations might have been for me over the years, I refuse to let it tarnish me and I will not take the easy path out. I'm focused on growing into an even more confident, loving, strong, supportive, and positive woman.

The muted nude suede is such a contrast to the usual gothic dark colours you would normally see when using skulls as an ornament. There is something so delicate and strong about these Kermit Tesoro pumps.

Never heard of the designer? You should check him out. His work is definitely avant garde. Although, some of his pieces and shoes do remind me of some other designers such as, McQueen and Garth Pugh, amongst others.

My current musical obsession is Beautiful People by Chris Brown ft. Benny Benassi. I ADORE this video, it shows Chris in a different light then what the media has been showing of him. It just makes me want to be around him.

I'm not done though. Have you seen his other video "Look At Me Now" ft Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes? This song is hype on its own but the video kills it. Side note, how amazing does Busta sound?

I've enjoyed Chris Brown's music before but these two songs and videos are on repeat for me and have given me a new love for his talent that perhaps has been shunned by some for far too long now.

I've been meaning to post photos of Carine Roitfeld for ages and never got around to doing it. If you're wondering who she is I'll give you a small tidbit. Carine was formerly a model and writer who eventually became Editor-in-Chief at French Vogue and after ten years she resigned from her position, leaving the publication on January 31st this year.

For now I will just post one photo of her just to display that even in simple black draped clothing she continues to exude style and confidence.

I don't even know what to say about Hairder Ackermann's FW 2011 collection. I was breathless when I saw these photos. The draping of each piece is done so beautifully. I loved the dark jewel toned colours that blended so well with one another. The mix of fabrics and materials are simply exquisite. This collection is a different take on his usual dark and gothic looks that he generally presents. I could go on and on but designers are continually blowing me for the upcoming seasons. I keep adding more collections to my "favourities".

Gucci SS 2011 Ad Campaign Video

I am obsessed, OBSESSED, with Gucci's Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Everything about it just screams my name. The collection had so much going on and yet it all tied together. I loved the vibrant colours and the 70s inspired styles of much of the collection, but Frida Giannini didn't stop there, she incorporated such beautiful nude/neutral coloured looks into the collection as well, which clearly had tribal and safari elements to it. Of course, there's still more, with an entire dark and black side which also had tribal elements along with a bit of goth and rock.

I have to say, for the Spring/Summer 2011 collections, Gucci, Lanvin, and Burberry Prorsum are my favourites and when I have time I'll try and post the looks that I like best from each collection. Below is the video ad campaign for Gucci, which I adore by the way. Take a look.

If you've been reading my blog you'll know I went to Egypt and flew out on November 4th. After a long journey, with its ups and downs and a fluke trip to Turkey, I finally landed back in Toronto on the 6th of December. I've been so busy ever since I landed. I returned to work the very next day and have had barely any down time. Anyway, I'm back at blogging after two whole months!

For some reason I've been completely obsessed with men's fashion recently. I've always loved men's clothing but I've become so fascinated with it over the past month so I thought my first post since I've been back should be based on a mens collection that I really like.

J. Crew's Mens Spring/Summer 2011 lookbook I believe came out around the time I was travelling into Egypt. The looks are simple and yet so well put together. James from Secret Forts describes this collection so well by stating, "There's an ease to this collection. It's sharp and a bit rakish. buttoned down yet untucked. It's a modern take on classic pieces without getting too precious about them. Clothes are for wearing and living in and with this Spring collection, J. Crew continues to do what they do best, mixing it up, editing and layering of texture, referencing the past, making clothes for a guy today, clean lines and rough edges, not over-thinking it." I couldn't have said it better myself.

Lanvin x H&M - Fashion Show and Collection

A while back I had informed my readers of Lanvin's collaboration with H&M and I also told you that on November 2nd they would release a video of the collection. Unfortunately, I've been so busy that I didn't get a chance to update my blog with the video but here it is in all its glory.

I like how it displays women of all shapes and ages looking as beautiful as ever. This video is so typical of the things I expect of Lanvin.

The moment I saw this editorial I knew I had to put it up on my blog. I'm so utterly in love with every detail of it. The editorial is called Wild Dreams and is featured in Vogue Germany's November 2010 issue. Hats off to Katie Mossman for styling this so beautifully and Greg Kandel for making the vision of Wild Dreams come to life through his lens. Liu Wen looks amazing in every photo.

Only Anna Dello Russo has the confidence to pull something like this off at a Masquerade. According to Tommy Ton (the photographer), she was getting ready for Vogue Paris' 90th Anniversary Ball. The dress was designed by Peter Dundas and the headpiece was created by none other than Gareth Pugh.

A Love Like No Other

Before I start I'm going to warn you that this is a very sappy post but it's for a very special person in my life.

The first time I heard this song on the radio (I believe that version was sung by The Pretenders but I liked Glee's version better) it actually brought tears to my eyes because I could only think of one person. A person that had the power to change so much about my life in a few years. A boy who managed to take control of my heart in a way I could never imagine. Someone who means the world to me and nothing he could do could ever change how much I love him.

This song is dedicated to the greatest blessing in my life, a boy like no other, my "son", Isaiah.

Isaiah, you are my everything. There is no greater gift your mother could give to our family than to bring you into our lives. I don't think I could ever properly describe the way I feel about you. I've never experienced the kind of love I have for you for any other human being in my life. Although, technically I'm your Aunt, I'll always see you as my own. If He Can Do It, She Can Do It - An Outfit for a Man or Woman

This man looks so relaxed and handsome in his outfit. It's well put together and it's just the right mix of casual elements mixed in with a slightly tailored look to make him so effortlessly fashionable.

When I saw the photo above it reminded me of a picture of a girl I had seen recently on another blog. She was in the same outfit as him but, of course, each piece was fit to flatter her shape and accentuate her curves. I was blown away by the similarities. Regardless of the fact that this look is more androgynous,she was still able to give it an edgy feel with a touch of sexiness. I especially loved her white hair! Only a few confident women can pull off hair like that.

So in conclusion, some looks can really be worn by both genders, you just need to know how to own the style and make it work for your body.

I love Floetry, even though they no longer produce music together, but the reason I chose this song is not based on solely my love for this duo. This song reflects all that I've written about in my previous post. If you feel that you connect with my words you may want to look up the lyrics because simply listening to the song may not allow you to really feel the impact of it (especially if you feel Floetry's sound is a little to heavy for you). Actually, this song only spoke to me when I read the words.

I know how personal some of these posts are getting but this is me and I'm willing to share a part of who I am and my life with others if it serves a good purpose. Recently, I had one of my readers that I've never met reach out to me and openly talk to me about their experiences. Not only that, but they expressed that they emailed me because they wanted to check up on me to see if I was doing okay. I'm happy that I'm able to connect so deeply with others and allow them to not only feel for me but to also find a place that can serve to give them peace.

Just a Thought

I know I felt this once and somewhere deep down inside I still feel it. I remember when I was so confident in who I was that I was able to love freely and genuinely without fear. My recent past has eaten away at me and blistered my feelings of self-worth. I still love with an open heart and its why I keep opening myself up to certain people even though I know their inability to reciprocate those emotions with the same amount of effort only ends up cutting me deeply.

I do believe self-worth is deeply intertwined with someone's ability to be sincere and have an open heart without fear. Self-worth and confidence is what gives you the strength to allow yourself to be vulnerable to someone who may use that power over you. Yet, at the end of the day, your self-worth is also what serves as a guide to knowing when something is harmful to you and it is what gives you the strength to pull out of situations like that. It is when you lose your sense of self worth that you begin to feel fear and sometimes that fear can paralyze you.

I do not feel it is wrong to love someone who may have hurt you. I believe the ability to continue to love that person is a reflection of your character and your strength. That doesn't mean you continue to put yourself in a situation that destroys you. It is sincerity with yourself and others that allows you to move away from people who harm you with only love as an answer and not hatred. It is self worth that enables you to leave those situations with a positive heart.

At the end of the day if you've given yourself to someone with sincerity and an open heart you can walk away knowing you were one of the greatest things to have entered that person's life. If that person didn't measure up to you in the same way, with sincerity and an open heart, then it is their loss. That's a powerful thing to acknowledge. It allows you to accept the situation with a peaceful heart.

I just want to make it clear, that real self worth is based on you being sincere and open to the reality about yourself. If you are able to take a step back and look at yourself with all your faults and issues without feeling like it's affecting your confidence, it can only serve to make you a better person by allowing you to accept yourself as you are and work on the things you can. Many people base their self worth on their own misconceptions about themselves and the moment they realize something doesn't jive with their self concept it shakes them into being defensive, angry, or belligerent. That mentality will only hurt them and hurt those who truly love them.

That quote seems so simple but there are so many facets to it that I could go on but I'll leave it with each reader to ponder what those words really mean to them.

Fashion - Random Shots that I Love

There's not much to this post but a few photos that I liked. My favourite one is the baby belly! Pregnancy is such a beautiful thing. Do you realize how magical and unreal it is to know a woman can carry another living and breathing human being within herself? It's so amazing to know that both men and women have the ability to create and give life. A child can be such a beautiful symbol of love and perfection in every way. Anyway, I'm getting off topic but my point is that pregnancy is such a beautiful thing and I love how every element of what the woman wore only served to enhance beauty of her new curves.

By the way, try and figure out who the baby bump belongs to. I'll reveal the secret soon.

Man of Style - Nickelson Wooster

A month back I finally discovered the name of an amazingly well styled man that I've featured on my blog several months ago but I had no idea who he was. (If you want to take a look at the previous post click here). After I figured out his name, I kept thinking I would blog about him again but I just never got down to it. Recently, Tommy Ton also announced him as one of the best dressed men so I know I'm not the only person thinking this man is amazing.

Without further delay, please let me reintroduce you to Nickelson Wooster, men's fashion director for Neiman Marcus. I don't know what it is about him that made me fall instantly in love with his style. It's can seem so wildly eccentric at times (not always) but yet he looks so put together and still has an air of sex appeal and masculinity. I love his confidence! Out of any style icon I've posted about, this man is my favourite, hands down.

Eat, Pray, Love - MY WAY!

I've been mentioning over the past few months that there's been a lot on my plate. For those reasons I had to put my blog to the side and work on sorting myself out. I've always debated travelling and this summer I kept thinking about leaving school for a while so I could travel. The idea of it was daunting. How could I just leave school? That's been my life for nearly 20 years! Yet I wanted to travel so badly. I just wanted the chance to experience another part of the world if I could.

A few days before school started I went to see the movie Eat, Pray, Love and it got me thinking again but of course, I was too frightened to actually go ahead and pull out of school. The idea lingered in my mind and I just couldn't shake the feeling that I just needed to do something unpredictable of me. So two days into school, I decided to pull out for the semester. YES! I did it. Trust me, it wasn't easy. I was panicking for the next week wondering if I had done the right thing but I know now that this is what I really needed.

Now you're probably wondering where I'm planning on going so I won't leave you in suspense any longer. I'll be flying out to Egypt! I'm terrified of travelling on my own but I can't wait to experience life there and more importantly meet up with my sister and nephew who have been there for the past year. I will try and travel elsewhere as well but for now Egypt is where I'm headed!

One Top Worn Three Ways

A while back I indicated I had done some shoots with Sid of myself but I never posted the photos. I thought I would post them today. Although the weather is changing I still feel these shots are worth while. I know I wrote about being insecure about how I look and I'll be honest, I don't like these photos too much of myself but I've been working out a bit and have lost some weight since then. I'm still not where I want to be but with good eating habits and an active lifestyle I know I'll be back where I was just a year or so ago.

The whole idea of the shoot was to show how you could take one item and wear it 3 different ways. The first outfit is more casual, the second is for a night out, and the third is business.

Lanvin x H&M

If you've been following my blog you know that one of my favourite collections has come from Lanvin. You would also know how much I love Alber Elbaz. Now word was going around recently that Lanvin and H&M would be collaborating. I first heard about it on Elin Kling's blog a few days ago but even she wasn't sure whether it was true or not. Well low and behold, on Thursday H&M revealed that the rumours were true. I've never been one to bother to line up for any collection but I am sooooooooooo excited to see this. I think I might be willing to soldier it out to buy some of his pieces.

Below is a video of Alber Elbaz explaining why he chose to be a part of this project.

There'll be more press releases to come and get this, H&M will debut an online video of the collection on November 2nd. Which means everyone gets to see the collection three weeks before it launches in stores!

Alber Elbaz describes the collaboration with H&M so eloquently by saying "This has been an exceptional exercise, where two companies at opposite poles can work together because we share the same philosophy of bringing joy and beauty to men and women around the world.”

I actually felt her words, although I believe everyone can have a different interpretation of it. Furthermore, the video just spoke to me with its subtleties and message.

Words of the Heart

God, I have so many thoughts racing through my mind. So much to say, and yet nothing comes out. There's been so much that's been going on in my life and sometimes I think if I blog about it I might actually help people and also help myself. But I'm afraid...afraid of offending people...afraid of the backlash. Originally I wrote I was afraid of hurting people but I realized speaking the truth isn't about me hurting someone. It's me telling the story how it really happened and not just what people on the outside saw. It funny, how quick people are to judge others and their situations when they haven't been there to witness what happens behind closed doors.

Sometimes I think I censor myself too much and I'm too quiet about what's really going on or how I really feel all because I'm so worried about how it might affect others. Yet, those "others" are the same people that seem to feel free to hurt, judge, and/or degrade me, it seems almost pleasurable to them.

I'm not sure what I'm accomplishing by writing this because I know no one really understands what I'm talking about except for me. Perhaps its therapy for me. Maybe I'll start another blog based on my life situations without naming names. I guess part of me wants to write things down because writing things out can get my thoughts in order but it also gives me a place where I can be truthful and open about how things really happened. Does it mean it will change the minds of those who have already made stupid assumptions? Who knows? Does it mean it might tick some people off. Maybe.

I'll tell you this, if I do start writing about my life's journey I know it will be a place where others can turn to so that they know they're not alone. These past two and half years of in and out depression and wrong decisions has thought me one thing, to never allow myself to let anyone bring me down again. I struggle to see that strong woman I once was but I know deep down inside, she's still there and NOTHING anyone can say or do will take me away from this journey to bring myself back to where I was. This nightmare has shown me where I made mistakes in accepting things I never should have, things I should have seen from the very beginning.

I know part of the reason I struggled so much was because of a quality that I have, that I also feel is a flaw, which is seeing the goodness in others. Never again will I make excuses for someone else. I want to help others and be a source of support but I will never allow myself to be abused in that way ever again. I refuse to allow someone to tear me apart and drag me down in order to build themselves up. I know now that losing myself to believe in someone else was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made.

This is the truth. I'm no longer afraid to say it.

Tommy Ton Exhibit!

OMG! I'm so excitttttttttttttttttttttted!!!!!! Tommy Ton has an exhibit of his work at Holt Renfrew in downtown Toronto on Bloor Street. I doubt Tommy is going to be there but all my blog followers know how obsessed I am with his work so I definitely want to go see his work on print. The event started August 18th and ends August 30th.

Styling and AFASHIONADO

Like I said before, I've been working on a few things and most recently I was able to be a part of an upcoming event called AFASHIONADO that will be held this Friday at Club V in Yorkville. It involves a fashion show for "Hedyilae" by Emily Woudenberg & Anastasiya Kuyevda and "Birthia" by Osvaldo Sales. All three designers also participated in FAT, Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week. Amongst other things, there will also be a photography exhibit by Sid Singh (for those of you who follow my blog, you already know who he is). I was the stylist for Sid's exhibit which will be unveiled on Friday. Below is a video created by Edward Reyes of Industry Insider which is a behind the scenes sneak peak of what's to come along with some of the model's I styled. Yes, I do have my ten seconds of fame between 40 to 55 seconds into the video but what's really important to me is that you get to see bits and pieces of the styling I did.

I can't wait to see the outcome!

I'll have the exhibit up for you to view some time next weeks with full credits to everyone involved.
